I’ll admit, I have a love/hate reaction when I consume Oprah’s work. I find her celebrity at times trumps her message and distracts me from engaging with her media conglomerate's content. Her influence, however, has been truly remarkable. She has empowered so many to live better lives. Ultimately I believe in her authenticity and her drive to better humanity. And that, I can stand behind.
Of note was Oprah’s ability to overcome obstacles of her youth and the pressures of her career to create a communications empire that spread highly positive messaging. She chose to view her teen pregnancy and tragic death of her infant son as a stepping stone. Failed relationships, drug use and eating abuse have all been used by her as pathways to betterment. We can all learn from her perspective dealing with past life challenges.
Oprah’s story demonstrates no longer holding life’s failures as anchors. Instead, she chooses to wear each setback as a badge of honour.
We have all suffered mistakes in our past. After all, we are all human. We can choose, however, to take responsibility for ourselves. We can process, learn and grow from our adversity. To move forward with confidence, we must use our past to our advantage; that is, acknowledge it, embrace it, learn from it, grow from it, and finally – let it go.
