How to Find Your Vision: A Step-by-Step Guide for Transformation

posted in Leadership

Finding your vision is one of the most transformative things you can do for your life and work.

Vision isn’t just a lofty idea—it’s a vivid picture of your ideal future, guided by your values, fueled by purpose, and aimed at meaningful transformation. A strong vision clarifies your next steps, anchors your decisions, and energizes your journey.

Here’s a practical guide to uncovering your vision.

1. Reflect on Your Past

The best visions are rooted in a deep understanding of your past experiences. Set aside 20 minutes to review:

  • The past year: Reflect week by week. When were you most in alignment? When did things feel out of sync?
  • Your life as a whole: Chart out moments year by year, identifying patterns.
Look for times when your actions aligned with your values and goals. These are the moments where purpose, values and progress worked in harmony—where achievements energized rather than drained you.

These patterns reveal what drives you, where you thrive, and what’s worth pursuing.

2. Brainstorm Boldly

Take what you’ve learned from your reflection and dive into brainstorming. Write down every idea, goal, or curiosity you can think of—15 to 20 words or phrases.

  • Combine unrelated interests. For example: “Artificial intelligence” + “sustainable nutrition” could lead to exploring tech-driven food solutions.
  • Look for synergies that spark your imagination and energize you.

From this list, craft three energizing statements that light you up. Circle the ones that feel most alive and connected to your identity.

3. Visualize Transformation

Vision is about more than goals—it’s about transformation. Imagine a future where your actions positively change:

  • The world
  • Your community
  • The lives of the people you touch
  • The physical environments you encounter

A compelling vision reflects how you want to transform your world. Picture the actions, outcomes, and emotional impact of this transformation.

4. Craft Your Vision Statement

Your vision statement should be:

  • Action-oriented: Describe what you’ll do, not just how you’ll feel.
  • Broad but meaningful: Focus on the kind of transformation you aim to create, not the specific details.

Here’s an example from my own business:
“I transform growth-oriented business and organizational leaders with life-changing strategic advice.”

Your vision should answer two key questions:

  • Who or what am I transforming?
  • What is the most natural way for me to do this?

5. Ground Your Vision in Values and Purpose

Your vision isn’t an isolated statement—it’s part of a bigger picture:

  • Your purpose: Why you do what you do.
  • Your values: How you do it, the principles that guide your actions.
  • Your mission: The specific, ongoing work you do to serve your vision. Lead with mission.

Your vision is the future you see, infused with emotional, spiritual, and values-driven energy. The clearer and more meaningful your vision, the more likely you are to bring it to life.

Your vision is your North Star, a transformational future that inspires you to take action. By reflecting on your past, brainstorming your passions, and crafting a powerful statement, you create a vision that propels you forward with purpose and clarity.

Transformation starts with seeing the future. Now, go make it happen.
